Matter
On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, died in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after Derek Chauvin, a White police officer, kept a knee on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. George Floyd was unarmed and handcuffed while lying face down on the pavement. Chauvin kept that knee on his neck for 2 minutes and 53 seconds after Floyd became unresponsive. Floyd’s last few words were “I can’t breathe” and “Momma”.
Floyd’s death is one of thousands of instances of police using excessive and unnecessary force on men, women, and children of color. We can no longer stand idly by with these injustices. In March, Harry Stevens from The Washington Post, created this simulation to depict the deadly track of Covid-19 if we did not practice social distancing. Blue dots are healthy, orange dots are sick, and purple dots have recovered. This graphic has been playing over and over in my head for months. I’ve been hoping that people will see this and understand the gravity of the virus.
I'm now using this same graphic to ask for your help with another deadly virus affecting our communities...racism and police brutality. What if the orange dots stood for someone who signs a petition and donates $5 to Black Lives Matter (or another worthy organization).Then they get a friend (blue dot) to donate $5 and sign as well. The blue dots then ask more friends to donate and sign becoming purple dots. Please join us in becoming a "Purple Dot" by donating and signing the petitions below.
